LA's Griffith Park closed because of windstorm

Los Angeles' sprawling Griffith Park has been shut down because of a windstorm that knocked down trees and stoked fears of additional damage from more strong gusts.

City Recreation and Parks spokeswoman Andrea Epstein says the closure occurred Thursday because of the high fire danger and the fact power was been knocked out to the park's eastern portion.

Hundreds of trees were toppled, but all major roads have been cleared. Work crews still have to see if there was any additional damage to hiking trails.

It wasn't immediately known when the park would reopen.

Just north of downtown Los Angeles, Griffith Park is one of the nation's largest urban parks, covering more than 4,300 acres. It's also home to the world-famous Griffith Park Observatory.
