What is a great African American cultural artifact?

For my Pan African American history class, we need to bring in an artifact. I have talked to a couple of African American friends, but they could not really think of anything. Now before I get comments about how this is not a place for homework, it is part of the assignment that we talk to others and I was wondering to see what you guys would think is a good artifact to either bring into class or a picture of the artifact. I need to be able to relate it to the African American culture from between 1865 and present. Anyone have any suggestions?

My 1 year old African-American daughter has some very coarse, dry hair. I have tried different oils, greases and cremes, but it seems as if nothing helps. I personally don't have bone straight hair, but of course with myself being older, I can straighten my hair with a blow dryer or a relaxer, but my child is too young for all of that. Hatari! is Swahili for "danger"—and also the word for action, adventure and broad comedy in this two-fisted Howard Hawks effort. John Wayne stars as the head of a daring Tanganyka-based group which captures wild animals on behalf of the world's zoos. Hardy Kruger, Gérard Blain and Red Buttons are members of Wayne's men-only contingent, all of whom are reduced to jello when the curvaceous Elsa Martinelli enters the scene. In tried and true Howard Hawks fashion, Martinelli quickly becomes "one of the guys," though Wayne apparently can't say two words to her without sparking an argument. The second half of this amazingly long (159 minute) film concerns the care and maintenance of a baby elephant, the barely credible finale is devoted to a comic pachyderm stampede down an urban African street, ending literally at the foot of Martinelli's bed. The other scene worth mentioning involves comedy-relief Red Buttons' efforts to create a fireworks-powered animal trap. Not to be taken seriously for a minute, Hatari is attractively packaged and neatly tied up with a danceable-pranceable theme song by Henry Mancini.

He is the younger of the singing duo Amanat Ali-Fateh Ali, who enjoyed immense prestige and success in Pakistan as well as India, until the demise of Amanat Ali Khan (1932--1974) Fateh Ali and his late brother were trained by their father, Akhtar Hussain Khan, a distinguished vocalist in the patronage of the princely state of Patiala in colonial, undivided India. Their grandfather, Ali Baksh Jarnail, also served the same court, and was a cofounder of the Patiala gharana. The prodigious talent of Amanat Ali- Fateh Ali received early encouragement at the Patiala court They had a glorious debut in 1945 at Lahore, sponsored by the influential connoisseur, Pandit Jeevanlal Mattoo Their breakthrough came at the All-Bengal Music Conference in Calcutta in 1949, when Amanat Ali was 17, and Fateh Ali was 14, after which they never looked back.
