Australia's domestic tourism industry performed well in the September quarter despite challenging conditions, according to new data released on Wednesday by the Federal Government's Tourism Research Australia.
The latest National Visitor Survey figures for the three months ending September 2011 showed domestic overnight trips were up 4.3 percent for the quarter with a 4.2 percent rise for the year to September.
The survey also showed a 3.5 percent rise in domestic visitor nights in the September quarter and an increase of 0.5 percent for the year.
The domestic spending was up by 2.1 percent in the quarter and 0.8 percent for the year.
Tourism Australia Managing Director Andrew McEvoy said he was encouraged by the results, which continue the positive trend set in the previous quarter.
"After several flat years, domestic tourism is growing again, with overnight trips, visitor nights and spend all up, this quarter and for the past 12 months," McEvoy said.
"Despite what some commentators might have us believe, Australian tourism is performing well in undeniably challenging circumstances."
