Why do so many African Americans still live in the southern region of the US today?

Racism still exists everywhere, but I think every state has a different degree of it. In Mississippi, there's a huge population of African Americans. I don't understand why so many Africans still live there when they're still so segregated over there. Any suggestions as to why?
