Why do people treat Africa as if it's a country and not a continent?

Africa has over 50 countries and within those countries are thousands of different backgrounds and tribes. I have a friend who is Nigerian and they don't establish themselves as Nigerian, they are Ibo, a tribe. There are just as many rich countries as there are poor countries in Africa. People tend to blend all of Africa into one big pity party, why is that?
