Pacific Northwest Wonders - Oregon Covered Bridges
Join us on ajourney through some of Oregon's longest standing historical landmarks. At one time Oregonhad more than 400 covered bridges. Today only a little more than 50 remain. The covered bridge blended well into the early economy of the Oregon countryside. The material for construction was close at hand, and the prevailing pioneer spirit was equal to the problems it presented. It was well known that wood, protected from the elements, would last considerably longer than that which was left in the open. The housing provides protection for the most expensive parts, like the truss, in order to make the structure last longer. Today, the pioneer spirit shows once again as individuals, local and state organizations as well as government agencies strive to protect and restore Oregon's covered bridges.
